Colin Roche invented the PenAgain from a single spark of an idea generated during Saturday detention and a lunchtime escape to a nearby flea market while still at Palo Alto High School in 1987. Years of soldering plastics into contoured designs and sleepless nights envisioning the pen induced him to team up with a former business partner and college associate, Bobby Ronsse. The PenAgain debuted in a single store in Palo Alto in 2002 and today is available in over 25,000 retailers in over 40 countries. The company established high volume manufacturing operations in Ningbo and Shenzhen, China starting in 2003. The Wall Street Journal has chronicled Pacific Writing Instruments in an on going series titled the “Long Road to Wal-Mart.”
