Literally translates as “Black Sesame Alley”, it represents one of the oldest architecture achievements in Beijing. The residents today still stroll over roads trotted by horse-drawn carriages all those years ago. A lack of commercial activities is probably a blessing in disguise.</image:caption>

Old folk dance together outside temple halls and come twilight, young couples cuddle on benches. It’s a restful place to stroll around, rent a rowing boat in summer and watch calligraphers practicing characters on paving slabs with fat brushes and water. So brushes, paper, ink and inkstones were regarded as “four treasures” of calligraphy. <image:caption>I am Cynthia from Peking University. It’s glad to involve in FACES for three years and become one of the co-presidents in Peking University this year. Having been born in Hong Kong, coupled with the study experience in the mainland China and different foreign countries, I feel my background has given me an international diverse outlook, and I have experienced distinct ways of living under different natural and cultural environments. Such contrasts have impelled me to explore the world and seek the understanding of social development. I am enthusiastic about geography, majoring urban planning and human geography now. I would like to develop a deep understanding of human–environment relationships and discuss China-US relationship from spatial perspectives. Email: lyyfeifeiyan@gmail.com</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hi everyone, I’m a recent graduate (UC San Diego ‘19) working in business sustainability in Hong Kong. Growing up, I had a chance to attend several international schools in Shanghai/Hong Kong and a local school in Beijing. “Home” is hard to grasp - inhabiting the in-between of Chinese/Cantonese/American culture, there’s not one I feel at home with but I’ve now come to see it as a gift. Very interested in the intersection space of social impact and business as well as building bridges and opening up communication channels - whether that’s cross sector work or something more in the vein of US/China relations. Since graduating, I’ve had a chance to work at the UN Global Compact and currently in a rotational program at PwC. Some things I enjoy...conversations, reading, surfing, creative outlets. Excited to meet all of you and learn together.</image:caption>

During a brief stint in Rome, Lyndi interned in communications and media at an international tourism company and studied migration and mobility, developing an interest in the intersection of U.S., EU, and Chinese relations. She is excited to share these observations through FACES. Through organizing and translating for cultural events, she gained a practical view of U.S.-China relations and is now mainly curious about science and technology leadership for peace and sustainability, in addition to the role of finance, which she had both RA’d and interned in. <image:caption>Hi all, I’m Bailey Marsheck. I’m currently pursuing my M.A. at the Yenching Academy of Peking University. “China watching”, and the study of US-China relations in particular, has kept me preoccupied over the last few years as I’ve found a strong affinity for academic study of contemporary China. I plan on pursuing a Ph.D. in the U.S. once my Mandarin has reached reasonable proficiency. One specific interest I bring to the FACES summit is a focus on U.S.-China perception, domestic opinion, and attitude formation. I am also intrigued by the strategic significance of Chinese high-skill workers and students for the broader relationship, inspired in part by growing up in Silicon Valley with mixed American-Chinese ethnicity. Deeper explanation is beyond the scope of this bio, but I look forward to glimpsing each delegate’s unique viewpoint towards recent US-China tensions and would love to discuss further with anyone of similar interests! When not engaged in academic pursuits, you can find me (COVID-permitting, of course) enjoying athletic activities, cultivating mindfulness, or volunteering for causes dear to my heart.</image:caption>
